Utah's newspaper history began in 1850 and their first paper was one of the first 20 newspapers established west of the Missouri River.
One of the key figures in Utah's newspaper history was Brigham Young. With the establishment of the Deseret News, journalism would thrive
in Utah.
Many newspapers in early history didn't have a chance of remaining in the publishing world because of the lack of one important consideration, money.
This wasn't an issue with the Deseret News since it was owned by the LDS Church and most Mormons firmly supported the newspaper with the majority of the readers in Utah members of
the LDS Church.
However one exception was the Salt Lake Tribune clearly anti-Mormon with Catholic ownership and management.
Regardless of religious affiliation, when it comes to research, all of the Utah newspapers will hold information that someone is seeking.
Newspapers currently in our archives: Deseret News 1850-1863.
